Cheesecake, A New York Tradition
When Harry Rosen opened Junior's on Election Day in 1950, he knew that in order to be a great restaurant in New York, you have to serve the best New York Cheesecake. So he and his Master Baker, Eigel Petersen, conducted laboratory-like experiments in the bakery at Junior's testing and tasting until they hit upon the magic formula. It's the same recipe we use today. Only the finest of ingredients would do--premium cream cheese, fresh heavy cream, eggs, and a touch of vanilla. No water. No fillers. All hand-blended in small batches and mixed for over 40 minutes. For our swirls and fruit-topped we use only the freshest fruit, homemade purees, imported chocolates and fresh spices...you'll taste the difference from Junior's. Today we still make our cheesecake the same way, all handmade with premium ingredients in our family-owned bakery.
All in the Family
After Junior’s opened it quickly became known as the place for great food, great value, and of course, fabulous cheesecake. In the 1960s, Harry Rosen retired and Walter and Marvin, the second generation of the family, took over the restaurant. As many of the landmark Brooklyn businesses closed during this decade, the Rosens held steadfast to downtown Brooklyn and Junior’s Restaurant by keeping Junior’s a place where all people feel welcomed. After all, everyone loves our cheesecake…it’s a unifying force... Today, Walter's sons, Kevin & Alan, remain at the helm.
World's Most Fabulous
In 1973, Junior’s found its cheesecake celebrated in print. Ron Rosenbaum of The Village Voice had this to say… “There will never be a better cheesecake than the cheesecake they serve at Junior’s… it’s the best cheesecake in the material world.” That same year, New York Magazine conducted a blind taste test and rated Junior’s the best cheesecake in the New York. Since then, our cheesecake has won several accolades and awards including the "Best Overall Mailorder Cheesecake" from the Wall Street Journal and Best Food Gift NY from People Magazine. Taste the difference yourself and you'll know why we say "The World's Most Fabulous Cheesecake."
